Newport Primary School welcomes applications for Nursery, Reception and in-year admissions. Information about each admissions process can be found below.
Nursery Admissions
Your child’s name can be added to our Nursery waiting list from birth. However, children cannot be admitted to the Nursery before their third birthday.
Please note, attendance at Newport Primary School Nursery does not automatically guarantee a place in Reception. Parents/carers must apply separately through Middlesbrough Council’s admissions process.
Parents/carers must still complete the Local Authority admissions process when applying for a full-time school place.

Starting Reception
Children are admitted into Reception at the start of the academic year in which they turn five.
To support a smooth transition into school, we provide a range of opportunities for children and families to become familiar with the school environment before starting Reception. These include:
- Classroom visits
- Parent/carer information meetings
- Opportunities for children to visit and become familiar with their new learning environment
A meeting is also held for all new parents/carers to explain the organisation of the Reception class and the wider school. During this meeting, parents/carers will have the opportunity to meet staff, learn about the curriculum and receive important information about starting school.
In-Year Admissions
In-year admissions are applications for school places outside the normal Reception admissions round. This includes:
- Children moving between schools within Middlesbrough
- Families moving into Middlesbrough from another local authority area
- Families moving to the UK from another country
- Families who have moved house and need to change schools
Middlesbrough Council coordinates all in-year admissions for mainstream schools within the borough.

Support for Families New to the Area
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Team (EMAT) provides support for:
- Families who are new to Middlesbrough from another country
- Children with English as an Additional Language (EAL)
- Traveller families
- Fairground and circus families
The team can provide assistance with school admissions applications, transfer requests and other school-related paperwork.

Appeals
If Newport Primary School is unable to offer your child a place, you have the right to appeal against the decision.
Appeals are administered by Middlesbrough Council and are heard by an independent appeals panel. Parents/carers will have the opportunity to present their case as part of the appeals process.
