At Newport Primary School, we believe that physical activity is fundamental to children’s health, wellbeing, enjoyment and achievement.
Our vision is to create an active school where movement is embedded throughout the day, helping children develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. We recognise that being active supports not only physical health but also concentration, confidence, resilience, mental wellbeing and academic success.
Through high-quality PE, active learning opportunities, playtimes, enrichment activities and competitive sport, we aim to ensure every child can enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Our Active School Approach
Physical activity is woven throughout school life and goes far beyond PE lessons.
Active Learning
Children regularly take part in Physically Active Learning (PAL) opportunities across the curriculum, helping them learn through movement whilst increasing daily activity levels.
Movement Breaks
Every class includes regular movement breaks throughout the day to improve focus, wellbeing and readiness to learn.
Active Playtimes
Our playgrounds provide opportunities for children to be active, social and engaged through:
- Playground Leaders
- Structured games and activities
- Sports equipment
- Skipping, ball games and active challenges
- Inclusive opportunities for all pupils
Active Environments
We continue to develop environments that encourage movement, including:
- Active corridors
- Flexible classroom seating options
- Active assemblies
- Outdoor learning opportunities
High Quality Physical Education
Children receive regular PE lessons that develop:

Sport, Competition and Enrichment
We believe every child should have opportunities to experience sport and competition.
Through our curriculum and wider enrichment programme, pupils have opportunities to:
- Participate in intra-school competitions
- Represent the school in local events and festivals
- Experience a range of sports and activities
- Develop leadership skills through pupil roles
- Build confidence and school pride
We work closely with local partners and sports organisations to broaden opportunities and inspire lifelong participation in physical activity.

PE and Sport Premium
What is the PE and Sport Premium?
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of PE, physical activity and sport.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity they provide.
The Department for Education identifies five key indicators which should guide spending:
- Increasing confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
- Increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
- Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school.
- Offering a broader and more equal experience of sports and physical activities.
- Increasing participation in competitive sport.
How We Use Our Funding
Our funding supports:
- Staff professional development and training.
- Development of active playgrounds and environments.
- Increased opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day.
- Access to sporting events, festivals and competitions.
- Specialist coaching and curriculum support.
- Resources and equipment that promote sustainable improvements.
